Case Study – Newcastle Recruitment Company – over 3000 items

This recruitment company from Newcastle came to us with the predicament of how they manage all their computers (over 400 desks), to keep them all safe without disrupting the staff, and to keep the costs down.

They were based over 2 floors of their office building, so what we recommended was that we split them into two jobs; do one floor in year one, and the other floor in year two, then alternate them so we did a floor every year, so that floor was tested every 2 years.

In addition to that we did them on a weekend, so that the staff were not disrupted.

During Covid, we even visited some staff at their homes and tested equipment on the door step or from the back of our vans! We have worked with this company since 2014.

Case Study – Public Sector Building – over 10,000 items

This well known building in Newcastle has many different areas, all managed separately, and some public facing. All doing very specialist work from educating the public, to scientific research, to maintenance to managing the facility.

They had previously been tested by a national company who although sold a good service didn’t really provide that. They sent engineers in overnight. Without the sites own staff available a lot of equipment got missed and they managed to do the full site in only a couple of nights. The facilities and maintenance teams knew they had missed a lot and cut a lot of corners.

We knew they had a shut down period in September, so we proposed to do the public facing areas then, and the other areas throughout the year. We now do 6 visits each year, and have split the centre into sections, so everywhere gets checked correctly and nothing gets missed.

We actually charge double what the previous company did, but the service is very happy with our work and we are now in the third year (2026) of working together.

The 4 Most asked questions about PAT testing

What’s involved in the PAT test?

PAT testing is farily inobtrusive, and when we work together minimal disruption is guarenteed. We do need to turn equipment off and unplug it to test it but the process is quite quick, so not much downtime. We do repairs as we come across them, so you don’t need to worry about delays due to faults, and every test produces results that are recorded into a fully compliant report which documents every device tested, maintenance and the device location in your premises.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

You are legally required to maintain safe electrical equipment for continued use and to prevent danger occuring. In the event of an accident occuring, for an investigation you need to provide evidence that your devices were safe, and that you have done everything you can to ensure this. Regular Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) finds faults and fixes them, ensuring dangers are prevented, and the accompanying report ensures your compliance.

How often should PAT testing be done?

PAT testing should be repeated as often as is necessary to prevent danger occuring. A risk assessment is a good way to work out the risks, which help to determine appropriate frequency. We can also guide you based on our vast experience. Typically, site managers opt for annual PAT tests. With DRA PAT Testing we put you in our reminder system, so when tests are due again we contact you to arrange a retest date.

Do new electrical devices require PAT testing?

Assuming you purchased the new appliances from a reputable source, they do not usually require PAT testing immediately, and should be ok to wait until your next scheduled test assuming that is within 12 months of purchase. We do however recommend that the device be visually inspected before use. However, if you are in doubt at all, get it tested, for peace of mind.
