Local PAT testing experts
Here at DRA PAT testing we specialise in inspection and testing of portable electrical appliances to ensure they are safe for you to continue using, to help you comply with your legal obligations.
All UK workplaces, whatever and wherever they are, are required to ensure that any electrical equipment provided is safe to be used and to continue using long term. To be safe it must continue to meet British Safety Standards and be maintained to do so. Equipment allowed to become faulty may cause an accident with a user, or a fire, which can result in loss to the business, or human life. The easiest method for ensuring your electrical equipment is safe, and to get the evidence required, is regular inspections and testing (also known as PAT testing).
We will work with you as a one-off or long term (no contracts though) to help you maintain safe electrical equipment.
Legally, you must ensure that all electrical equipment is safe to use, this includes everything fitted with a plug, everything hard wired, everything battery operated and the mains wiring installation. All of these types however do not need to be checked by the same person. For example you can check your own battery operated equipment like your mobile phone, laptop or battery powered tools – a shock from one of these is not going to kill you, but you need to make sure they’re being used safely.
Your mains wiring should undergo a fixed wiring inspection, or EICR every 3-5 years (usually) depending on the use, by a suitably experienced and qualified electrician. Electrical appliances that have been hard wired also need checking, usually this would be done at the same time as the EICR by that electrician, or they could be checked by another suitably competent person like your PAT tester. Appliances with a plug should be checked by a competent person, usually from a PAT testing company. Appliances with a plug need checking more often as they can be easily unplugged and moved, which can result in easier damage. It’s also very easy to misuse a portable appliance, which may be a fire risk so there is that added need for extra checks.

Why is PAT Testing important?
✅ The law requires thorough inspection and testing to ensure electrical equipment is properly maintained – Portable Appliance Testing is inspection and testing for electrical equipment fitted with a plug.
✅ A PAT engineer will assess the suitability of an appliance for the environment it is being used in. When PAT is completed, you’ll be provided with a record of results and PAT Test Certificate – a record of maintenance, which is a requirement of The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
✅ PAT testing records can be used to demonstrate compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 as they confirm that your electrical systems are being maintained to prevent danger.
✅ Regular PATs check that workplace electrical equipment, devices and systems are maintained in good working order and repair, to comply with The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
✅ Regular inspections and testing (PAT) of electrical equipment in residential property help you comply with The Housing Act 2004 (England and Wales)
✅ Carrying out PAT tests on appliances supplied as part of a rental agreement, before the start of every tenancy help a landlord to comply with The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s guidance.
✅ An electrical equipment test will check that an appliance is safe, and carries a genuine ‘CE’ mark when first supplied, hired, sold second hand, or as part of accommodation lettings to help you comply with The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016
✅ If the plug of an appliance does not meet the Plugs and sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 we will change it for one that does.
PAT testing is important because it confirms whether or not an appliance is safe to use (by inspecting and testing); the engineer will usually carry out repairs if there is a fault (maintenance) and it provides you with a PAT Testing Certificate (records) – all of which you are required to do to comply with UK workplace regulations and insurance.
